It was likely no accident that Kate Middleton was seated next to U.S. President Donald Trump at the state dinner at Windsor Castle on September 17—and, as always, what she was wearing was also likely deeply thought out.

The Princess of Wales wore a stunning sheer, gold Phillipa Lepley gown and her favorite tiara—the Queen Mary Lover’s Knot—and Bethan Holt, author of The Duchess of Cambridge: A Decade of Modern Royal Style, told Page Six that “Kate delivered that fairytale princess moment again, which I think everyone needs and craves and Donald Trump wanted.”

The president “loves gold,” Holt continued, adding that “it felt like a very calculated decision to wear gold.”

A private meeting between the Trumps and the Prince and Princess of Wales during the state visit was described as “warm and friendly,” and throughout the day Kate made sure to not overstep Queen Camilla with her style choices.

“Kate’s gold dress was a real moment on social media,” Holy said. “But in the room, it almost blended into the walls. It was very clever in terms of toeing the line and not taking attention away from Camilla.”

“Kate wants to be respectful while, the reality is, her look and fashion choices are going to garner more attention than Camilla,” Holt said, adding that “Kate will always steal the limelight. She looks the part in the way the world really expects a royal woman to look.”

Royal historian Hugo Vickers said that the successful state visit showed that the royal family still knows how to “pull out all the stops” when it comes to events of that magnitude: “I think there is absolutely no question the whole thing was a tremendous success, certainly on the royal side,” he said. “It all worked seamlessly.”

According to the outlet, the Prince and Princess of Wales are expected to be invited to the U.S. in 2026 to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday celebrations, and depending on his health, King Charles may join, too.
