Kate Middleton Wears a “Breathtaking” $135,584 Pair of Queen Elizabeth’s Earrings With a Deeper Meaning Than Meets the Eye. Donald Trump’s visit to the UK this time is also an opportunity for Princess Kate to affirm to the world that she has inherited all of Queen Diana’s legacy. And here she wants to implicitly declare that she will be the future “Queen” of the UK, Meghan is no longer an “obstacle” to her step to the throne.

While much attention was paid to Kate Middleton’s stunning sheer gold gown and her Queen Mary Lover’s Knot tiara—and rightfully so—the Princess of Wales’s earrings worn to the state dinner on September 17 at Windsor Castle are also not to be missed.

At the state dinner Wednesday evening—which hosted U.S. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and 160 guests—the future queen wore earrings that previously belonged to Queen Elizabeth, who died at 96 years old on September 8, 2022.

Zack Stone of U.K. jeweller Steven Stone tells InStyle that the late Queen’s Diamond Orbital Pendant Earrings are valued at $135,584 and are composed of clusters of brilliant diamonds arranged in a floral and orbital design. A large central stone sits at the base of each pendant.

“The Princess of Wales dazzled in a breathtaking pair of earrings that once belonged to Queen Elizabeth II,” Stone says. “Each piece features brilliant-cut diamonds arranged in a floral and orbital motif, with a larger central stone anchoring the base of each pendant—a design that evoked both eternal elegance and the enduring legacy of the monarchy.”

Calling the earrings “a true emblem of regal sophistication,” Stone adds that the floral pattern symbolizes grace and renewal, while the orbit-like arrangement suggests unity, continuity, and the far-reaching influence of the Crown.

“Perfectly suited for grand state occasions, lavish banquets, and ceremonial events, these earrings allow Kate to pair them effortlessly with tiaras and other treasured heirlooms,” Stone says.

Atop Kate’s head was Princess Diana’s favorite tiara, the Queen Mary Lover’s Knot, which she wore frequently throughout her royal life (which Kate has done, as well). In fact, Queen Elizabeth offered for Diana to wear that tiara to her July 29, 1981 wedding to Prince Charles, but Diana declined “because the late princess claimed it was so heavy that it hurt her head,” The Daily Mail reported.

Instead, Diana famously wore her family’s heirloom Spencer tiara.

The Lover’s Knot tiara—which is valued at over $135 million—was kept in a safe at Buckingham Palace after Diana’s tragic death in 1997, only being worn by Kate since.

“Though an incredible piece, the tiara has its cons, and it’s claimed to have been so heavy that it hurt the late Princess of Wales’s head, giving her headaches,” Maxwell Stone of Steven Stone said. “It’s also said to be noisy, due to the swinging pearls.”

Before the state visit kicked off on September 17, Kate wore Queen Elizabeth’s jewelry—specifically a four-strand Japanese pearl choker and the late Queen’s Silver Jubilee earrings—to the Duchess of Kent’s funeral at Westminster Cathedral on September 16, one of the many times that the Princess of Wales has donned Her late Majesty’s jewels.

Of Kate’s appearance at the state dinner, her younger brother James Middleton reacted to her stunning appearance on social media, commenting on a photo of his older sister that he was proud to be British, using the U.K. flag to further display his pride in both his sister and his home country.
