Nobody Wanted Putol Because She Had Only Two Legs — Six Years Later, She’s Running Through Life on Her Own Terms

When four tiny puppies were brought into a bakery in the Philippines, three quickly found people willing to take them home. The fourth was different. Born without functional hind legs, the little puppy struggled to move and could not stand like her siblings. Potential owners passed her by, believing she would not survive for long. But one man, Danilo Codilego Jr., looked at the unwanted puppy and saw something worth fighting for.

At the time, Codilego was working at the bakery when a coworker arrived hoping to sell the puppies for 5,000 pesos each. One after another, they were chosen—except the little two-legged dog. Codilego eventually decided to take her himself. He named her Putol, a Tagalog word associated with something cut or shortened, a simple name that would eventually become familiar throughout their neighborhood.

The beginning was difficult. For roughly the first two years of her life, Putol could not walk independently. Without the support of two normal hind legs, even ordinary movement demanded enormous effort. But Putol kept trying.

Little by little, she discovered how to shift her weight forward. Her front legs grew stronger, her balance improved, and eventually she learned to lift her body and move using only those two legs. What once seemed impossible gradually became natural.

Today, at six years old, Putol can move around remarkably well. She explores her neighborhood, plays alongside other dogs and has become a familiar presence in the community. Her unusual way of moving attracts attention, but the people who know her best see something beyond her disability: an energetic dog with confidence, personality and an unmistakable desire to participate in life.

At home, Putol has also appointed herself guardian. She alerts Codilego when strangers approach and can even become jealous when he gives another dog too much attention. When work requires him to travel, neighbors help care for her, a reflection of how deeply she has become part of the community.

Years ago, people looked at Putol and saw a puppy whose future seemed uncertain. Codilego saw a life that deserved an opportunity.

Putol did the rest.

She adapted, strengthened her body and learned to experience the world in her own remarkable way. She may move differently from other dogs, but she has never needed four legs to understand loyalty, happiness or love.

Putol’s story reminds us that an animal does not need to be physically perfect to live a meaningful life. Sometimes a second chance begins when one person looks beyond what is missing and chooses to value everything that remains.
